This free, public, outdoor event reverses the walking route of the Chinese community’s expulsion from Tacoma in 1885, reclaiming the city for all peoples and cultures. In this current political reality, characterized by racist and nativist rhetoric, the Walk for Reconciliation Against Racism meets the ongoing need for community education and public acknowledgment of historic and present injustices. Through ceremony, storytelling, and shared presence, it empowers participants to confront racism, advocate for equity, and build a more inclusive future for Tacoma.

Each year, the walk is led by local civic, business, educational, and faith leaders. It begins at Union Station, where the Chinese pioneers were marched at gunpoint out of town, proceeding north through downtown Tacoma, along Schuster Parkway and the railroad–largely built by Chinese laborers—back to the Chinese Reconciliation Park, near the site of what was once Tacoma’s “Little Canton.” Throughout the walk, we will be within a half mile of the Tacoma Northwest Detention Center, where even today the same white nationalist agenda is being played out.

This year, we are offering shuttling back to the Tacoma Union Station, to return walkers back to their parked vehicles. If you would like to take advantage of this service, meet in the Chinese Reconciliation Park’s parking lot after the event program has concluded.
