“Culture Over Killing Fields: One Woman’s Journey” is a short film by Tacoma filmmaker Joanne Lisosky that tells the story of how Tacoma educator Rady Oum survived the Cambodian genocide in the 1970s and lived to share the richness of her culture with her adopted community.
Oum, the founder and director of Cambodian Classical and Folk Dance of the Northwest, tells of her childhood, her immigration to the US, and her use of traditional Cambodian dance to teach the younger generation about their heritage and to help them navigate the complexities of growing up bicultural in a modern American city.
Directed by Joanne Lisosky, this film is the latest in
a series of films called “Our Communities, Our Neighbors” produced
by the Chinese Reconciliation Project Foundation
with funding from Tacoma Creates.
