Co-directed by Joanne Lisosky and Derek Nunn, this film is the latest in a series titled Our Communities, Our Neighbors, produced by the Chinese Reconciliation Project Foundation with funding from Tacoma Creates.
Film Description:
This film spotlights the monumental civil rights victories of Lyle Quasim. Born in Chicago but claiming Tacoma as his home and cause, Mr. Lyle transformed the city through relentless activism—from a confirmed socialist to the presidency of Bates Technical College to founding co-director of Safe Streets to becoming the first Black director of Washington’s Department of Social and Health Services. His guiding mantra, “Get up, show up, and engage!” (which might even become the film’s title), pulses through every scene. Through spirited interviews with prominent Tacomans, Kwabi Amoah‑Forson (Peace Bus), uncovers Mr. Lyle’s legacy, delighting in every story and revelation as he listens, learns, and celebrates a life of service.

March 30th, 2026 Film Premiere Recap

The premiere of Lyle Quasim: Show Up, Suit Up, and Engage! was a meaningful celebration of a life dedicated to justice, civic engagement, and the ongoing work of civil rights in Tacoma. On the evening of March 30th, 2026, the Grand Cinema welcomed 173 attendees across two sold-out theaters, filling the space with elected officials, community leaders, and the family and friends of those who helped bring this film to life.
The documentary tells the story of Lyle Quasim, one of Tacoma’s most enduring voices in civil rights activism, and the premiere offered the community a rare opportunity to honor that legacy in person. Following the screening, co-directors Joanne Lisosky and Derek Nunn, Music Director Quintin Davis, and narrator Kwabi Amoah-Forson joined Lyle Quasim himself for a Q&A, giving the audience a chance to reflect on the film and engage directly with the people behind it.
We’re deeply grateful to the incredible team who brought this story to life:
Co-directors Joanne Lisosky & Derek Nunn – for their thoughtful and inspired direction
Musical Director, Quintin Davis – for a moving, unforgettable score
Narrator, Kwabi Amoah-Forson – for narration filled with clarity and grace
And most of all, thank you to Lyle Quasim. Your lifetime of service, presence, and leadership is not just your story; it’s a part of Tacoma’s story. We’re honored to help share it.

With Heartfelt Thanks to Our Community Partners
Finally, we extend our sincere gratitude to Tacoma Creates for their generous and continued support of cultural programming that reflects and strengthens our community. Without Tacoma Creates funding, our organization wouldn’t be able to continue partnering directly with local communities and leaders in Tacoma to tell their stories, in their own words, shaped by their own participation.
We must also thank The Grand Cinema for collaborating with us to provide a venue worthy of the occasion. As a cornerstone of Tacoma’s arts and culture community, the Grand Cinema brought both warmth and professionalism to the evening, and its team’s dedication helped make the premiere a truly memorable experience.
